Romans 12:1-2 "....Do not be conformed to THIS AGE (The Old Covenant Age), but be TRANSFORMED..." Tuese Ahkiong

Romans 12:1-2  "....Do not be conformed to THIS AGE (The Old Covenant Age), but  be TRANSFORMED..."

Tuese Ahkiong
For you thinking Christians,

The word "world" in this passage is the greek word "aioni" or "aeon" which is age but is typically translated "world." Now how does that change our popular view of Romans 12:1-2?  What "age" was Paul, Christ and the the Gospel writers in?

Let me know if you experienced the aha moment. What maybe helpful is looking at Ch 11 and how that supports the context of "this age."  Paul is exhorting the saints to not be conformed to Judaism, Old Covenant Law, rules and regulations.  Sure applications maybe used to not be worldly but the meaning of the text is speaking of the 1st saints who were under going the transition or TRANSFORMATION between old and new covenants.

Romans 12:1-2

ESV 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to THIS WORLD, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

YLT 1 I call upon you, therefore, brethren, through the compassions of God, to present your bodies a sacrifice -- living, sanctified, acceptable to God -- your intelligent service; 2 and be not conformed to THIS AGE, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, for your proving what [is] the will of God--the good, and acceptable, and perfect.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
17 And the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty;
18 and we all, with unvailed face, the glory of the Lord beholding in a mirror, to the same image are being transformed, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
  • With the new covenant age of grace, those who trust in Christ are led by The Spirit into liberty from the law of death, the first covenant.  They are being transformed into the body of Christ.

Philippians 3:20-21

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

20 For our citizenship is in the heavens, whence also a Saviour we await -- the Lord Jesus Christ --
21 who shall transform the body of our humiliation to its becoming conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working of his power, even to subject to himself the all things.

  • The saints were waiting for Christ's return in the first century which took place in 70AD.  Christ TRANSFORMED not the physical bodies of the saints but "the body" as in covenant body to become conformed to "the body of Christ."
