- The Mother (Deja Taylor): She was sentenced to two years in state prison for felony child neglect and 21 months in federal prison for using marijuana while owning a firearm and making a false statement during the purchase. The sentences run concurrently.
- The Assistant Principal (Ebony Parker): She was charged with eight counts of felony child neglect. In a separate civil lawsuit brought by Zwerner, a jury recently awarded Zwerner $10 million in damages after finding Parker grossly negligent.
- The Student: Due to his age, the boy could not be criminally charged in Virginia and has not been named publicly by authorities. He is reportedly receiving therapy and counseling, and custody was transferred to his great-grandfather.
Where is the biological father???
Kid believes he was ignored by teacher and so he smashes teacher’s phone and gets suspended. The day he comes back is when he shoots teacher!
The 6-year-old student, referred to in court documents as "JT," obtained the 9mm handgun used to shoot his teacher, Abigail Zwerner, by taking it from his
mother's purse at home. The firearm was legally purchased and owned by his mother, Deja Taylor. According to the boy's statements to authorities and other school staff after the incident:
- He said he got the gun the night before the shooting by climbing onto a drawer to reach the top of a dresser where his mother's purse was located.
- He concealed the weapon in his backpack and later in his pocket before the shooting occurred at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia.
- He also reportedly told a reading specialist, "I stole it because I needed to shoot my teacher".
His mother, Deja Taylor, initially claimed the gun was secured with a trigger lock and kept in her purse on a high shelf in her bedroom closet; however, federal prosecutors and investigators later stated that no trigger lock, lockbox, or key was found during searches of her home.
Deja Taylor pleaded guilty to a state felony child neglect charge and federal charges related to using marijuana while possessing a firearm and making a false statement during the gun purchase. She was sentenced to a combined total of nearly four years in prison for these offenses.
The six-year-old boy who shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, was reportedly in a "violent mood" and had made threats against other children, but the exact reason for him shooting her is unclear and likely complex, given his age and reported severe emotional issues
. The incident occurred after the assistant principal was allegedly warned about the child's behavior and the presence of a weapon but did not act. The student was not charged with a crime because of his age. Fatigue!!!
