The states with the largest African American populations are Texas, Florida, and Georgia. For states with the highest percentage of African American residents, the list is topped by the District of Columbia, followed by Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia.  

By total number of residents 

• Texas: Has the largest African American population, with approximately 3.96 million residents. 
• Florida: Ranks second with about 3.7 million residents. 
Georgia: Is third with roughly 3.54 million residents. 
New York: Follows closely with 3.53 million residents. 
California: Has the fifth-largest Black population, with around 2.83 million residents. 

By percentage of population 

District of Columbia: Has the highest percentage of African Americans at 44.17%. 
Mississippi: Has the highest percentage among states, with 37.94% of its population identifying as Black. 
Louisiana: Ranks third among states with 33.13% of its population being African American. 
Georgia: Is fourth with 33.03%. 
Maryland: Comes in fifth with 32.01% of its population being Black.
