 has been involved in some form of military conflict for a significant majority of its existence. While the exact number of years can vary depending on the definition of "war" or "armed conflict," some sources estimate the US has been at war for over 222 years out of its nearly 250-year history. This is approximately 93% of the time since its founding in 1776. 

The discrepancies in the number of "war years" arise from:

• Formal Declarations: The U.S. Congress has only formally declared war on 11 occasions (War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Spanish-American War, WWI, and WWII). The actual duration of these officially declared wars amounts to far fewer total years.
• Undeclared Conflicts: The US has engaged in numerous military actions and conflicts without a formal congressional declaration of war, such as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
• Scope of Conflict: The American Indian Wars were a series of intermittent struggles over more than a century (roughly 1783-1924), which some analyses consider a continuous conflict, significantly increasing the total years of warfare.
