The Gaza Strip, often referred to as Gaza, is a small territory located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It measures 41 kilometers (25 miles) long, and its width varies from 6 to 12 kilometers (3.7 to 7.5 miles).
In terms of area, Gaza encompasses approximately 139 to 141 square miles (360 to 365 square kilometers). To provide some perspective, the Gaza Strip is roughly twice the size of Washington D.C. or comparable in size to the cities of Philadelphia or Detroit.
It's important to note that the Gaza Strip is considered one of the most densely populated areas in the world. In 2023, the population density was estimated at 15,609 people per square mile. While the territory itself has not shrunk, the ongoing conflict and the imposition of a blockade have resulted in a significant portion of the area being controlled by Israeli military administration, restricting Palestinian movement and potentially impacting the usable area for residents.
