Why was David TERRIFIED of YHWH taking His Holy Spirit away from him???
By Tuese Ahkiong

Psalm 51 was written by David after he committed adultery, murder and tried to cover it up, but got called out by Nathan, The Prophet in 2 Samuel 12:1-15.

Psalm 51:10-12
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and TAKE NOT YOUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM ME.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

WHY WAS DAVID TERRIFIED OF YHWH TAKING HIS HOLY SPIRIT AWAY FROM HIM?

As a young man, David saw YHWH take His Holy Spirit away from King Saul and sent evil spirits into him.

And THE SPIRIT OF GOD RUSHED UPON SAUL when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.

NOW YAHWEH’S SPIRIT DEPARTED FROM SAUL, AND AN EVIL SPIRIT FROM YAHWEH TROUBLED HIM.

Saul’s servants said to him, “SEE NOW, AN EVIL SPIRIT FROM GOD TROUBLES YOU.

Let our lord now command your servants who are in front of you to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. THEN WHEN THE EVIL SPIRIT FROM GOD IS ON YOU, he will play with his hand, and you will be well.”

When the spirit from God was on Saul, David took the harp, and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and THE EVIL SPIRIT DEPARTED FROM HIM.

On the next day,  AN EVIL SPIRIT FROM GOD CAME MIGHTILY ON SAUL, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. David played with his hand, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand;

AN EVIL SPIRIT FROM YAHWEH WAS ON SAUL,as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing with his hand.

In what sense did YHWH take His Holy Spirit away from Saul?
Saul was ordained by YHWH as the first King of Israel.  He was YHWH’s anointed/ chosen one.  It is in this sense, that of being YHWH’s chosen to the office or ministry of King, that he was given the Holy Spirit to do the work/ministry/service of THE LORD.

1 Samuel 24:6-7,10
He (David) said to his men, “THE LORD FORBID THAT I SHOULD DO THIS THING TO MY LORD, THE LORD'S ANOINTED, TO PUT OUT MY HAND AGAINST HIM, SEEING HE IS THE LORD'S ANOINTED.” So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how THE LORD GAVE YOU TODAY INTO MY HAND IN THE CAVE. AND SOME TOLD ME TO KILL YOU, BUT I SPARED YOU. I SAID, ‘I WILL NOT PUT OUT MY HAND AGAINST MY LORD, FOR HE IS THE LORD'S ANOINTED.’

YHWH took this ministry away from Saul for his disobedience to His Word, and thus, took His Holy Spirit away from him.
YHWH did NOT give Saul THE HOLY SPIRIT in a salvific sense but in a ministry/ office sense.
Saul ended his life by seeking pagan witches and mediums and eventually killed in battle.

So SAUL DIED FOR HIS TRESPASS WHICH HE COMMITTED AGAINST YAHWEH, BECAUSE OF YAHWEH’S WORD, WHICH HE DIDN’T KEEP; and also because HE ASKED COUNSEL OF ONE WHO HAD A FAMILIAR SPIRIT (MEDIUM/WITCH), to inquire,

David, the second King of Israel, was fully aware of what happened to the first King of Israel, Saul, thus he pleaded with THE LORD:

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.11 Cast me not away from your presence, and TAKE NOT YOUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM ME.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

David knew he was good as dead if YHWH would take His Holy Spirit from him!
YHWH showed grace and mercy upon David for he, too, showed utter contempt for YHWH's Word.

2 Samuel 12:13-14
13 Then David confessed to Nathan, “I haive sinned against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. 14 Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord by doing this, your child will die.”
