The parish, founded in 1849, lost its previous church building in the 

1906 San Francisco earthquake. The parish opened a temporary facility in 1907, raised enough funds to start construction of the present cathedral in 1927, started using it in 1934, and completed final construction in 1964.

Now for a little history.  In 1849 San Francisco had approximately 1,000 inhabitants; by 1856 the population had soared to 50,000.  

Gold was discovered in Sierra Nevada foothills 100 miles from San Francisco in 1848.  Thus began the 1849 gold rush from where we get THE FORTY-NINERS!  California became the 31st state to join the Union on September 9th, 1850.  Ain’t it strange with just 1000 people in San Francisco in 1849, the original Grace Cathedral was founded and stood for around 57 years!!??
