Critical Race Theory aka MARXISM

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a modern outgrowth of Critical Theory (CT) pioneered by the Frankfurt School, both sharing roots in Marxist thought and aiming to critique societal power structures, but CRT specifically applies these ideas to race, arguing racism is systemic within law and institutions, while the Frankfurt School focused broadly on capitalism, culture, and emancipation. Both traditions use a critical lens to uncover hidden domination, with the Frankfurt School emphasizing social pathology and emancipation, and CRT focusing on how race shapes all aspects of American life and law.

Critical race theory (CRT) is an academic and legal framework that posits racism is a normal and embedded feature of American society, existing beyond the realm of individual bias and prejudice. It originated in the 1970s and 80s among legal scholars and activists, including Derrick Bell and KimberlĂ© Crenshaw, who sought to understand why racial inequality persisted despite landmark civil rights legislation.

Core Tenets

Critical race theory is an evolving body of scholarship, but its key principles generally include:

  • Race as a Social Construct CRT scholars argue that race is not a biological reality but a social and cultural invention used to oppress and exploit people of color and advance the interests of white people.
  • Systemic Racism Racism is considered systemic or institutionalized, woven into laws, policies, and institutions (such as education, housing, and the criminal justice system), rather than being solely the product of a few "bad apples" or individual explicit bias.
  • Critique of Liberalism CRT questions foundational liberal concepts like "color blindness," legal neutrality, and the idea of a meritocracy, arguing that formally neutral laws can still lead to racially discriminatory outcomes.
  • The Use of Storytelling The framework values the lived experiences and narratives of people of color (counterstorytelling) as a legitimate way of understanding and challenging dominant narratives of racial inequality.
  • Intersectionality Coined by KimberlĂ© Crenshaw, this concept examines how various social and political identities (such as race, class, gender, and disability) overlap to create unique modes and experiences of discrimination and privilege.

Purpose and Application

The movement seeks not only to understand social situations but also to transform them by applying its analysis to concrete problems in pursuit of a more just society.

In education, for example, scholars use the CRT lens to examine the causes of persistent racial inequalities, such as school segregation, disproportionate student discipline, and curricula that reinforce racist ideas. It provides a framework for researchers and policymakers to identify and address embedded biases in systems.
