- Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus
After Judas Iscariot's death by suicide, the remaining eleven apostles selected Matthias to replace him and restore the number twelve, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.
Later in the New Testament, other early Christian leaders are also referred to as apostles, most notably Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus) and Barnabas.
