In the Bible, being called by God's name (or having God's name placed upon someone) is a deep statement of identity, ownership, and intimate relationship rather than just a casual label.
Belonging and Ownership: In the ancient Near East, putting one's name on something (like cattle, land, or a house) meant it belonged to them. When God says His people are "called by My name" (such as in 2 Chronicles 7:14), it signifies that they are His personal possession.
Close Personal Knowledge: In scripture, a name (shem) represents a person’s core character, reputation, and existence. When God calls someone by name, it shows that He knows them intimately—the way a close friend or shepherd knows an individual. For instance, Isaiah 43:1 reassures Israel, "I have called you by name; you are mine".
Association with Divine Protection and Character: Bearing God’s name means you represent Him in the world. Just as a child carries a parent's family name, God's people are expected to reflect His attributes—such as holiness, mercy, and justice—and in return, they receive His covenant protection and presence through hardships.
Designation for a Purpose: To be called can also mean being chosen or ordained for a specific task, mission, or ministry within God's plan.
