The Lord’s Prayer By Tuese Ahkiong

The Lord’s Prayer by Tuese Ahkiong

Matthew 6:5-15

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The sermon on the mount begins in Matthew 5:1. Who is Christ teaching?

“1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.  He said:”

@@ Christ is teaching His disciples and crowds.  Who were the crowds?  Israelites

In chapter Matthew 4, Christ begins His ministry after resisting the devil’s temptations in the desert.

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

@@ One can only repent if one is under a Law that has been transgressed, broken, or sinned against.  Only Israel was under YHWH’s Law and only Israel broke YHWH’s Law!

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

@@ Christ is preaching to a Israelite  audience under the covenant.  Notice how He goes to synagogues!

BREAKDOWN OF THE LORD’S PRAYER

6:7 don’t be like gentile pagans that babble or keep repeating their chanting prayers, I.e. Catholics repeating “The Lord’s Prayer”  20 times and “Hail Mary” 30 times. Smh.

6:9 acknowledge YHWH as their Father and His Holy Name..

:10 pray for YHWH’s Kingdom to come, His will to be done!

Well, did the kingdom COME or are His People Israel still waiting in vain?  Was God’s will in this context done or is it still on hold or thwarted?  Remember, Yeshua instructed His Apostles, disciples and Israelite crowds with this prayer for the kingdom to come and elsewhere says it would come in their lifetime!

:11 God is Provider of His People Israel’s daily bread and needs, just like in the desert with Moses, God provided mana and water.

We see provisions of food, fish, bread, drink, wine provided to the ekklesia/ church in that 1st century generation.

:12 Forgiveness of their debt/ sin.

:13  protection from temptation and the evil one

Tradition calls this prayer “The Lord’s Prayer” but did Yeshua pray it!?  What do you think?  Well, not for forgiveness of sin

It was given to His disciples who prayed it and some saw the answer to the prayer!

The Kingdom indeed Came

God’s Will was done in bringing His Kingdom, forgiveness to His People Israel's.

Scripture teaches that the Kingdom was at hand and near in the 1st century 30-33AD.

Matthew 3:2. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven IS AT HAND.”

Matthew 4:17. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven IS AT HAND.”

Matthew 10: 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Matthew 16:28
Truly, I say to you, there are some standing
here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Mark 1:15
“The time has come,” he said.
“The kingdom of God HAS COME NEAR. Repent and believe the good news!”

Mark 9:1

And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

Luke 9:27

But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

Luke 10:9-12
Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘
The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God HAS COME near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

Luke 21:31

So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

@@ How long is near, at hand, some of you standing here will not taste death before you see the kingdom…?

The lifetime of the 1st century disciples/ apostles is the time frame!

LUKE 11:1-13

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

@@ God’s people, the chosen elect remnant of Israel, made alive by The Holy Spirit were to seek THE LORD in prayer and be persistent even as Paul said to pray without ceasing!   Prayer is the declaration of utter dependence upon God!  The 1st century saints’ prayers were the means ordained by God to move mountains and bring about The Kingdom Come!  Their prayers were indeed answered, amen.  The Kingdom came!  The Bible story is Israel’s story and that story ended in 70AD.
