WHO WAS (past tense) SATAN/ THE DEVIL?

Satan is simply defined as ADVERSARY, opponent or in the way,

 and  

Devil is defined as SLANDERER, LYING ACCUSER. 

Satan with a Capitol “S” is NOT a proper name!

There is NO spirit being or fallen angel in Scripture called “The Devil” or “Satan!”

THE DEVIL THROWS THE SAINTS INTO PRISON 

- The unbelieving  Jews were throwing Christians into jail. Paul used to be a satan or devil!

Revelation 2:9-11

“‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of THOSE WHO SAY THAT THEY ARE JEWS AND ARE NOT, BUT ARE A SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN. ¹⁰ Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, THE DEVIL IS ABOUT TO THROW SOME OF YOU INTO PRISON, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. ¹¹ He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

**Those who said that they were Jews and are not were the unbelieving  Jews who were essentially the synagogue of Satan.  They put the saints in jail like Paul did.  Paul, supports this in Romans 2 below.  

Luke 21:12

But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and PRISONs, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.

**Yeshua predicts that His disciples/apostles will be put in prison by the people He calls serpents and vipers, the unbelieving Jews. 

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

 

**Who is likened to a serpent that will be sentenced to hell (Gehenna) in that 1st century generation?

Romans 2:28-29

For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. ²⁹ BUT A JEW IS ONE INWARDLY, AND CIRCUMCISION IS A MATTER OF THE HEART, BY THE SPIRIT, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

**A Jew is one inwardly who has place faith in Christ.  The jew who did not place their faith in Christ were unbeliever and proven enemy of God.

Throughout the New Testament who do we see as the enemy of the church, the first persecutor of the church, the ones delivering the saints TO JAIL?  The Unbelieving Jews.

John 8:44

YOU ARE OF YOUR FATHER THE DEVIL, AND YOUR WILL IS TO DO YOUR FATHER'S DESIRES. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

**Christ gives it to the unbelieving jews and tells them that they are of their father the devil or of the nature of a slanderer and liar. 

The book of Acts gives several examples of the unbelieving Jews putting Christians in prison.  Even Paul when he was Saul put many Christians in prison.

Acts 5:17-19

But THE HIGH PRIEST ROSE UP, AND ALL WHO WERE WITH HIM (THAT IS, THE PARTY OF THE SADDUCEES), and filled with jealousy ¹⁸ THEY ARRESTED THE APOSTLES AND PUT THEM IN THE PUBLIC PRISON. ¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the PRISON doors and brought them out, and said,

Acts 5:24-26

Now when THE CAPTAIN OF THE TEMPLE AND THE CHIEF PRIESTs heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. ²⁵ And someone came and told them, “Look! THE MEN WHOM YOU PUT IN PRISON are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” ²⁶ Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

Acts 12:3-5

About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. ² He killed James the brother of John with the sword, ³ and when he saw that IT PLEASED THE JEWS, HE PROCEEDED TO ARREST PETER ALSO. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. ⁴ AND WHEN HE HAD SEIZED HIM, HE PUT HIM IN PRISON, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. ⁵ So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

Acts 26:9-11

⁹ “I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. ¹⁰ And I did so in Jerusalem. I NOT ONLY LOCKED UP MANY OF THE SAINTS IN PRISON AFTER RECEIVING AUTHORITY FROM THE CHIEF PRIESTS, BUT WHEN THEY WERE PUT TO DEATH I CAST MY VOTE AGAINST THEM. ¹¹ And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

Acts 28:17

After three days he called together the local leaders of THE JEWS, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, YET I WAS DELIVERED AS A PRISONER FROM JERUSALEM into the hands of the Romans.

Acts 10:38

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

***The Jews aka the lying accusing slanderers oppressed the people with their legalism.  

Romans 16:20

The God of peace will soon crush SATAN under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

**How long is soon?  Paul says Satan or THE ADVERSARY would SOON be crushed under the Roman Christians’ feet in the 1^st century.  What event in their lifetime would correspond to the crushing of satan or the crushing of God’s adversary?  Jerusalem was crushed in 70 A.D. 

1 Thessalonians 2:18

because we wanted to come to you—indeed, I, Paul, once and again—but SATAN HINDERED US.

*Satan, THE JEWS hindered the saints.

1 Thessalonians 2:14-16 

¹⁴ For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same THINGS FROM YOUR OWN COUNTRYMEN, even as they did FROM THE JEWS ¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and don’t please God, and are contrary to all men, ¹⁶ FORBIDDING US TO SPEAK to the Gentiles that they may be saved, to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost.

*The Jews hinder or forbid the saints to speak along killing Christ and the prophets.

1 Corinthians 5:5

you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

**Satan in this context were the Jews who would punish the man for his evil of sleeping with his father's wife.

2 Corinthians 12:7

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

**Paul's thorn in the flesh were the unbelieving  Jews.

1. John 6:70
   Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”

   During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,,

   1. Matthew 26:14-16

      14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

      
      
   **The devil aka the Jews made a deal with Judas to betray Yeshua. 

   Judas was the devil that Yeshua spoke of in this context. 

   
   

   
   

***Why did Yeshua call Peter satan?

Matt 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

***Peter was being a pussy ass cowardly ADVERSARY to Christ’s mission!

Matthew 4:1-11

 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,

    but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God

    and him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

 V1 The Jewish priesthood are the slandering lying accusers and NOT a spirit being or fallen angel that tempt Christ in the desert after his 40 day and night fast. 

V3 The Jews tempt Christ with turning stone to bread. 

C5-6. Jews put Yeshua to the test!

V8-9 Jews put Christ to the test to worship the Jews legalistic system. 

V10-11 Yeshua schools the Jews with The Word and angels aka messengers (probably humans) come and serve Him. 

Luke 4:1-13

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 

5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,

    and him only shall you serve.’”

9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’

11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

***

V13 the Jews leave Christ until another opportunity to tempt again. 

John 6:70

****jews were the devil that dealt with Judas to take down Yeshua.

Ephesians 4:25-28

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

***Give no opportunity to the slandering lying Jewish accusers!

Ephesians 6:10-12

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

***Christians strong in THE LORD would be able to stand ground against the schemes of the unbelieving slanderous accusing lying Jews!

1 Timothy 3:5-7

5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

***a young untrained elder could get schooled and condemned by the unbelieving Jews aka the devil. 

2 Timothy 2:24-26

24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

***God may grant repentance and The Truth to unbelievers by using His servants to free them from the snare of the unbelieving Jews aka devil. 

Hebrews 2:14
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

***The Jews aka the devil wielded the ministry of death, THE LAW!

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 

***Resist the Jews aka the devil and he / they will flee from you like they did with Christ in the desert. 

1 Peter 5:8
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 

***The Jews aka the devil hunted down Christians just as Yeshua said they would.  

1 John 3:8
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

***The Jews were under THE LAW aka the ministry of death.  The Jews sinned from the beginning.  The Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the Jews: breaking THE LAW aka sinning under Law.  

1 John 3:10
By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

***The children of the accuser or slandering liar are those who do NOT practice righteousness or those with no love for a brother of Israel. 

Jude 1:9
But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

Daniel 10:20-21

 20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? But now I will return to fight against the prince of Persia; and when I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come. 21 But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.

Daniel 12:1
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.

Revelation 12:9
And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.  

***the Jews loss their exalted position before God and the most symbolic book of the Bible presents a figurative description of this account.  The great dragon/ ancient serpent is symbolic of the Jewish priesthood.   The Jews deceive the whole covenant world and are thrown down to the earth/ covenant land along with their messengers. 

Revelation 12:12
Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

**** The Jews Judgment day was coming in their generation as Christ said in Matt 23:34. 

Revelation 20:2
And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

****The Jews were bound in the sense of not being permitted to stop The Gospel from succeeding in its mission in bringing in the elect remnant of God by the end of that first century generation. 

Revelation 20:10
and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

**** Symbolic description of severe punishment coming upon the enemy of YHWH, unbelieving Israel.
