Taqiyya is a concept in Islamic jurisprudence that permits a person to conceal their faith or tell a lie only when facing imminent danger, severe persecution, or a threat to life.
Definition and Purpose
- Core Meaning: The word comes from an Arabic root meaning "caution" or "to shield oneself". It allows a believer to hide or deny their religious identity outwardly while keeping their faith intact in their heart if forced under duress.
Quranic and Historical Basis
- Quran 16:106: States there is no blame on someone who is forced to deny their faith under compulsion, provided their heart remains secure in belief.
Surah An-Nahl (16:106) states that anyone who disbelieves in God after believing faces severe divine wrath and punishment, except for a person who is forced or coerced to renounce their faith while their heart remains firm and secure in belief.
- Quran 3:28: Permits believers to show caution or outwardly guard themselves when facing hostile forces or threats.
Quran 3:28 (Surah Ali 'Imran, Verse 28) prohibits believers from taking disbelievers as auliya (allies, protectors, or guardians) in place of believers, with an exception for self-protection or precaution (taqahor taqiyya) when facing severe danger or tyranny.
- Historical Context: While recognized across traditions, taqiyya became historically prominent in Shia Islam due to centuries of political persecution and minority status under various ruling caliphates. Sunni Islam also recognizes narrow allowances for self-preservation under extreme coercion, alongside related concepts like tawriya (using ambiguous language).
