The Greek word oikoumenē (οἰκουμένη): World, Earth, Known World, Roman world

In the original Greek texts of the Bible, several distinct words are used to translate the concepts of world, earth, and land. Each carries its own unique meaning, ranging from the physical ground to the collective system of human society.
Words for "Earth" and "Land"
  • Gé (γῆ) - The most common Greek word for earth or land. It can refer to the physical "planet", the literal ground/soil, or a specific geographic region or country (e.g., "the land of Judah"). It appears frequently in the creation account and in contrasts between heaven and earth.
  • Oikoumené (οἰκουμένη) - Specifically translated as the "inhabited earth" or "the inhabited world". In the New Testament, it usually refers to the known, civilized world under the influence of the Roman Empire.

Words for "World"
  • Kosmos (κόσμος) - This is the most famous Greek word translated as "world," occurring roughly 186 times in the New Testament. Rather than just meaning the physical "globe", it typically refers to humanity, society, the systems of human civilization, or the worldly systems alienated from God.
  • Aiōn (αἰών) - While frequently translated as "world" in older versions (e.g., "the end of the world"), this word literally means an "age," "era," or "lifetime". It refers to the spirit, culture, or timeframe of a particular historical period rather than a physical location.

The Greek word oikoumenē (οἰκουμένη) appears exactly 15 times in the New Testament. It is most frequently translated into English as "world", "earth", or "Roman world".
