The Arab Spring was a series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that began in late 2010 across the Middle East and North Africa, challenging autocratic regimes and demanding political reform, democracy, and better economic conditions, sparked by a Tunisian street vendor's self-immolation and spreading via social media and pan-Arab media, leading to leaders overthrown in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, but also prolonged civil conflict in Syria and Bahrain

• Origins: 
• Started in Tunisia in December 2010 when Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire to protest police harassment, inspiring widespread anger against authoritarianism and corruption.
• 
  
Motivations: 
People sought an end to entrenched dictatorships, rampant corruption, high unemployment, poverty, and lack of freedoms, fueled by rising food prices and educated youth discontent.


Spread: 
Protests quickly spread through the Arab world using social media (like Facebook, Twitter) and satellite TV to organize and share information, leading to simultaneous uprisings.


Major Events:


• 1. Tunisia: President Ben Ali overthrown (Jan 2011).  Over 95% Muslim, Islam is the state religion.


• 2. Egypt: President Mubarak forced out (Feb 2011).   Predominantly Muslim (around 90%), Islam is the state religion.

• 3. Libya: Civil war led to Gaddafi's overthrow and death (2011).  Over 95% Muslim, Islam is the state religion.
• 
  
• 4. Syria: Protests turned into a devastating civil war (ongoing).  High percentage of Muslims (around 92%), with a significant Christian minority.
• 
  
• 5. Yemen: President Saleh stepped down (2012).  Over 95% Muslim, Islam is the state religion.
• 
  
• 6. Bahrain: Protests brutally suppressed with regional intervention.  Around 81% Muslim, Islam is the state religion, but has a large non-citizen, non-Muslim workforce. 


Outcomes: 
Varying results, from Tunisia's relatively successful transition to democracy (despite later challenges) to ongoing civil wars and increased authoritarianism in other nations, with democracy remaining elusive in many areas. 

In essence, the Arab Spring was a pivotal moment challenging decades of stable, repressive rule, showcasing the power of popular mobilization but also highlighting the complex and often violent path to political change in the region, notes Encyclopedia Britannica and Cornell University Research Guides.
