KKK's Origin 

• Founders: The KKK was founded in late 1865 or early 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee, by six Confederate veterans: Frank McCord, Richard Reed, John Lester, John Kennedy, J. Calvin Jones, and James Crowe.
• Initial Purpose: It began as a social club for former soldiers but rapidly evolved into a terrorist organization aimed at overturning Reconstruction and restoring white supremacy.
• First Leader: Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a prominent slave trader and Democrat, is believed to have been the first "Grand Wizard". 

Relationship with the Democratic Party 

• Political Alignment: In the 1860s and 1870s, the KKK functioned as a "strong arm" for local Democratic politicians, using violence to prevent Black citizens and "Radical Republicans" from voting.
• Membership: Most Klan members were Democrats, as the party at the time represented white Southerners who opposed the Republican Party's civil rights policies.
• The 1924 "Klanbake": At the 1924 Democratic National Convention, the party was so deeply divided over whether to condemn the Klan that a resolution to do so failed by a single vote. 

Historical Context & Realignment 

• Party Evolution: It is important to note that the platforms of both parties shifted significantly in the mid-20th century. After the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, many segregationist "Dixiecrats" left the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party.
• Official Stance: Modern historians and fact-checkers emphasize that while individual Democrats supported and led the Klan, the group was never an official wing of the Democratic National Evil

Blacks were mostly Republican after the Civil War and Reconstruction period because why would they support the democrats who enslaved them and their ancestors???
