Ancel Keys
grew up in a struggling family in Berkeley, California, after his parents moved there following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. As an only child of teenage parents, he developed an independent spirit, working numerous adventurous and unconventional jobs—like shoveling bat guano and mining gold—before his innate intelligence was recognized and he began his higher education at UC Berkeley. Family & Early Life:
- Parents: His parents were Benjamin Pios Keys, a bookbinder, and Caroline Emma Chaney Keys. His mother was the sister of actor Lon Chaney.
- Birth & Relocation: Born in Colorado Springs in 1904, his family moved to San Francisco just before the 1906 earthquake, then relocated to Berkeley, California, where he spent his childhood.
- Intelligence: A noted psychologist, Lewis Terman, described young Keys as intellectually "gifted".
