The USA has a disproportionately large number of prisoners compared to the rest of the world, holding roughly 20-25% of the world's incarcerated population while making up less than 5% of the global population. While the US incarceration rate is among the highest in the world, with close to 2 million people in its jails and prisons, China has the next largest prison population, though exact numbers vary and can be higher depending on how "incarcerated" is defined.

United States vs. the world

  • Population: The U.S. has roughly 4.4% of the world's population but about 20-25% of its prisoners.
  • Incarcerated population: The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other country.
  • Incarceration rate: The U.S. rate of incarceration is one of the highest in the world.

Key facts

  • As of 2021, the U.S. incarceration rate was 531 per 100,000 people.
  • China has the next largest prison population, but the U.S. has more, especially when considering the full scope of the U.S. system (prisons and jails) compared to China's system.
  • The United States incarcerates people at a higher rate than many countries with similar or higher crime rates.
