When Scripture references the Canaanite woman of Jericho RAHAB in the book of Joshua and in OT & NT, it includes the title: HARLOT to distinguish her name vs RACHAB, a different Israelite woman married to Salmon in the geneology of Christ.
- Also known as "the harlot", Rahab was a Canaanite prostitute in Jericho who hid two Israelite spies from the king. She was saved from the destruction of Jericho when the Israelites captured the city.
- The name Rachab appears in the Gospel of Matthew. Rachab is mentioned as an ancestor of Jesus, and is the wife of Salmon and mother of Boaz.
In the New Testament, Rahab is referred to as “the harlot” in each of these passages. A different spelling of the name, Rachab (as transliterated in the King James translation of the Greek Ῥαχάβ) is mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew as one of the ancestors of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
Jubilee Bible 2000 used:
Joshua 2:1
¶ And Joshua, the son of Nun, sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went and came into a harlot’s house, named
RAHAB, and lodged there.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, men of the sons of Israel have come here this night to spy out the land.
3 Then the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that have come unto thee, who have entered into thy house; for they are come to spy out all the land.
4 And the woman had taken the two men and hidden them and said thus, It is true that some men came unto me, but I did not know where they came from.
5 And at the time of shutting the gate, when it was dark, these men went out, and I do not know where the men went; pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and hid them among the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 And the men pursued after them along the way to Jordan unto the fords; and as soon as those who pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
Joshua 6:17
¶ And the city shall be anathema unto the LORD, even it, and all the things that are in it; only
RAHAB, the harlot, shall live, she and all that are with her in the house because she hid the messengers that we sent.
18 But keep yourselves from the anathema, that ye not touch nor take any thing of the anathema so that ye not make the camp of Israel anathema and trouble it.
19 For all the silver and gold and vessels of brass and iron are consecrated unto the LORD; they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.
20 Then the people shouted when the priests blew with the shofarot, and it came to pass when the people heard the voice of the shofar, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, each man straight before him and they took the city.
21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and ass, with the edge of the sword.
22 But Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman out of there with all that she has, as ye swore unto her.
23 And the young men that were spies went in and brought out Rehab and her father and her mother and her brethren and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred and put them outside in the camp of Israel.
24 And they burnt the city with fire and all that was in it; only the silver and the gold and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
**Rahab the harlot and her family lived outside the camp of Israel, so sounds like she was not Salmon’s wife!
Joshua 6:25
And Joshua gave RAHAB, the harlot, her life and also to her father’s household and to all that she had; and she dwells in Israel even unto this day because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
**What does it mean for Rahab and her Jericho/ Canaanite people to dwell in Israel!? Well, since 2 verses earlier it says Rahab and her people dwelt outside the camp of Israel, then it logically means she and her people dwelt among Israel on the outside of Israel’s camp!
Hebrews 11:31
By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish together with the disobedient, having received the spies with peace.
James 2:25
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
RACHAB is a different person from RAHAB THE HARLOT. In fact, Rachab was an Israelite woman married to Salmon. This passage does not include the title “THE HARLOT” to identify the person in the book of Joshua.
Matthew 1:4-6
4 Aram begat Aminadab; Aminadab begat Naasson; Naasson begat Salmon;
5 Salmon begat Booz {Greek word for “Boaz”} of Rachab; Booz begat Obed of Ruth; Obed begat Jesse;
6 Jesse begat David the king; David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
Deuteronomy 23:1-4
He that is wounded in the stones or is castrated shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.
2 A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.
3 An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever,
4 because they did not meet you with bread and with water in the way when ye came forth out of Egypt and because they hired against thee Balaam, the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.
